Perception of perspective in augmented reality head-up displays

Augmented Reality (AR) is emerging fast with a wide range of applications, including automotive AR Head-Up Displays (AR HUD). As result, there growing need to understand human perception depth in AR. Here, we discuss two user studies on perception, particular the perspective cue. The first experiment compares cue (1) physical world, (2) flat-screen, and (3) an HUD. Our HUD setup provided two-dimensional vertically oriented virtual image projected at fixed distance. In each setting, participants were asked estimate size angle. We found that angle sizes differs from but not flat-screen. underestimation world’s compared screen might explain egocentric phenomenon environments. second experiment, for different graphical representations angles are relevant practical applications. Graphical alterations displayed resulted more variation between individuals' estimations. Furthermore, majority tended underestimate observed most conditions. results suggest fixed-depth display mimic accurately screen, rather than 3D environment. On-screen alteration does help improve cases.
